Drawing on its 16 years experience in manufacturing premium quality power amplifiers for the touring market, RUSSELL has recently introduced the P3200-XD power amplifier as part of the highly acclaimed ‘Precision series XD’. On display at the recently held PALM exhibition, the P3200-XD caught the attention of every visitor with its chest slamming power and neat internal construction.
The Precision Series XD now consists of three amplifiers; P1600-XD, P3200-XD and P4000-XD. The P3200-XD design is based on the very successful P4000-XD and thus has all the excellent features of it. It is a three rack unit amplifier. It’s also a grounded bridge design which pumps out an awesome 1200 watts RMS per channel with an amazingly deep bass response and a bright and clear sound. The amplifier uses metal power transistors in the output stage which are directly mounted on the heat-sink without any washers in between. As there is nothing in between the transistor and the heat-sink, heat conduction from the transistor to the heat-sink is as good as it can get. This way of mounting the power devices has been a trademark design of Russell amplifiers for many years.
The PCBs used are ‘glass-epoxy’ and the copper tracks being over 100 micron thick are able to reliably handle the high output currents that the amplifier delivers. It’s a well known fact that any power amplifier is as good as its power supply. With this in mind the company designed two separate power supplies, with enough reserve power, for the two channels. At the heart of this are two state of the art enormous transformers. Their breakdown voltage is higher than that of almost any other amplifier on the market. They are ‘vacuum impregnated’ too. Russell believes that if an amplifier is properly designed it will not be the cause of ground-loops and will never generate ‘ground noise’ on the system. If a ‘ground lift’ switch is provided in an amplifier, the company says that it is a sign of a poor design.
Obviously, no Russell amplifier has ever had a ‘ground lift’ switch. Four multi-speed fans provide the necessary cooling for our warm tropical climate. These fans are normally off and turn on at different speeds as the amplifier heats. This reduces the amount of dust collected within the amplifier. The P3200-XD like both the other amplifiers in the ‘Precision series XD’ contains all the required protection circuits, including a sophisticated ‘clip limiter’ which is programmable for either fast or slow activation. All XLRs and spec-on are Neutrik. The inputs are balanced and the gain is adjustable for different input sensitivities.
