3) Budget Amplifiers for DJ use (DJ SERIES - BLACK A)
a) BLACK 2500
Two months ago, the Indian market saw the launch of a new breed of power amplifiers called ‘BLACK’. These amplifiers have been field tested by reputed sound companies in India for one and a half year before being released for sale.
The amp provides 750 watts per channel into 4 ohms and 1250 watts into 2 ohms. With this amount of power, a host of features and a great sound, the BLACK amplifier is surprisingly one of the cheapest amplifiers in the market.
According to the promoters, the BLACK series of power amplifiers have been specifically designed for warm tropical climates and is most suitable for India. Two large dual speed fans ensure that the amplifier is kept cool even when used in desert conditions. Specially developed for this amplifier, the advanced protection circuitry keeps the amplifier safe even when used into a one ohm load. Added to this is the ‘Clip-Limiter’ circuit that protects the speakers when the amplifier is driven hard into clip. Most amplifiers in the lower price segment of the market tend to use plastic power transistors in order to reduce costs, but, this is not the case with the Black.
The Black 2500 uses the same metal transistors found in expensive amplifiers. Unlike some amplifiers that use cheap paper-phenolic pcbs, the black uses only glass-epoxy pcbs which are very strong and can last for many years. A temperature protected, powerful toroidal transformer provides adequate power to the amplifier. The potentiometers used are the ‘world famous’ ALPS brand. An impressive led dot-graph gives an indication of the output power levels. The front panel also has an indicator to show if the amp is switched to the bridge mode.
The output terminals are ‘Neutrik’ speckon and binding posts. The input terminals are balanced XLR and TRS jack sockets. A neat internal layout makes servicing very easy.
